Ethiopia is unfortunately not a top destination for many Kenyans. There are a couple reasons for this which I will highlight below.
Also, not many Kenyans have traveled to Ethiopia.
When it comes origin of tourists into Kenya, Ethiopia ranked 12th in 2023 with about 42,000 arrivals. This is quite low for a country that is just above Kenya.
There were 3 African countries that ranked higher than Ethiopia. You can read more on this in the article: Top 30 nationalities that visited Kenya in 2023
But why are many Kenyans not going to Ethiopia and vice versa?
In my opinion, the main reason is the air fare. It costs about Ksh 90,000 for a return ticket. That is almost double the fare that one would pay to travel to Dubai.
However, both governments have tried making travel easier for the two nations with the Kenyan government introducing the e-visa allowing Ethiopians to get an e-visa for about Ksh 4,000 and get it in a couple of hours or in two days.
Enough about this. Let’s talk about why you are here. Getting an Ethiopian visa as a Kenyan.
How much does a Kenyan need to pay to get an Ethiopian visa?
Kenyans do not need a visa to get into Ethiopia.
This is something that I really commend the Ethiopian government for implementing.
You only need three things:
- A valid passport and
- A yellow fever card.
- And a pre-filled Ethiopian Travel Health Declaration Form
So, if you are thinking of traveling to Ethiopia, what you should be more concerned about is your air fare.
